Nestled in the scenic Zabarwan Range of the Western Himalayas, Dachigam National Park is a pristine natural sanctuary spanning over 141 square kilometers in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The park’s name, “Dachigam,” translates to “ten villages,” commemorating the ten villages that were relocated to create this protected area in 1910.

Famed for its lush forests, alpine pastures, and sparkling streams, Dachigam is a biodiversity hotspot teeming with wildlife. It is renowned as the last bastion of the critically endangered Hangul deer, also known as the Kashmir stag, which is the park’s flagship species. Besides the Hangul, Dachigam hosts a variety of fauna, including leopards, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, and a rich avian population featuring the golden oriole, black bulbul, and koklass pheasant.

Dachigam’s landscape transitions from gentle meadows in the lower regions to rugged mountains in the upper reaches, offering a diverse array of habitats and breathtaking vistas. The park is divided into two sectors: Lower Dachigam, accessible to tourists, and Upper Dachigam, which is more rugged and less frequented. Visitors can explore its well-marked trails, enjoy trout fishing in its pristine streams, and soak in the serenity of its untouched natural beauty. The best time to visit is from April to October when the weather is pleasant, and the flora and fauna are most active.
